The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located in the middle of the Indian Ocean approximately 2750km north-west of Perth and 3685km west of Darwin. Our nearest neighbour Christmas Island is around 900km east north-east of us. Cocos lies approximately 12° south and 96.5° east, locating the islands in the humid tropical zone. Cocos time is UTC + 6.5 hours, which translates to 3 ½ hours behind Eastern Standard Time (4 ½ hours when Eastern Summer Standard Time is in effect) and 1 ½ hours behind Western Standard Time.
