Airport Information

Cocos (Keeling) Islands Airport is located on West Island, the larger of the two inhabited islands that make up the 27 coral islands in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands group.

A single 2438 metre sealed runway runs right next to the town settlement and makes for interesting plane-spotting activities for the locals. Full runway lighting, PAPI visual approach system and navigational aids are also available. Toilet facilities are available in both the arrivals and departures buildings. Please note that smoking is not permitted inside any airport buildings or on the airport tarmac.

In early 2005, Forte Airport Management were appointed as contract managers of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Airport for the Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS), now the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government. Since then, the airport has been upgraded to a Security Controlled Airport (SCA).

Cocos (Keeling) Islands Airport complies with the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (1998) and the Aviation Transport Security Act (2004) and Aviation Transport Security Regulations (2005). Regular audits are undertaken by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Office of Transport Security to ensure ongoing compliance. Aerodrome certification was granted to Forte Airport Management on 9 December 2005.

For information regarding the aerodrome, please click here.

Even though there is no fencing around the full perimeter of the SCA, access across or onto the runway is strictly prohibited to unauthorised personnel. You will notice that the runway strip is defined by white gable markers with the following signage.

The markers act as an invisible fence-line. So that we can meet Aviation Security legislation, please remain outside these markers at all times or you may risk prosecution. Should you have a legitimate reason to access the runway or any other query, please contact the Airport Manager on 9162 6536.

Arrivals

Once you disembark your aircraft, you are met by one of Forte Airport Management's screening officers who will direct you to the arrivals building. Your luggage arrives shortly thereafter, having been bought in by a tractor-driven baggage cart.

Security Information

Cocos (Keeling) Islands Airport operates a full security screening checkpoint and all departing and transiting passengers are subject to security screening prior to aircraft boarding. Passengers are reminded that sharp items, such as nail clippers, scissors, pocket knives, metal nail files, corkscrews, fishing hooks and lures and knitting needles should not be packed in your carry-on luggage. Please ensure any items of this kind are packed in your check-in luggage. Detection of these items at screening points will increase your wait time and may result in confiscation of the item.

Aerosol cans that contain products for use on the body can be in your carry-on luggage, however, please ensure that it has a lid on it, otherwise it will be confiscated.

We ask that laptop computers be removed from their carry bags and screened separately. Electronic equipment will not be damaged by x-ray screening. The removal of diving regulators and excessive camera equipment from carry-on baggage will also help the screening process run smoothly. Passengers checked baggage may also be subject to screening measures.

Please be reminded that your baggage must never be left unattended in public areas. All such baggage will be treated as suspicious. All baggage should be clearly tagged with your contact details.

Passengers are warned that all threats and comments made about carrying of weapons or explosives – whether intended as a joke or not are taken seriously and may result in refusal of carriage onto the flight and prosecution.

Passengers who travel with medical equipment must carry evidence such as a doctor’s certificate to substantiate their condition. Airline approval to travel must also be sought. Wheelchairs are available for passengers with reduced mobility. Please talk to National Jet Systems staff about booking a wheelchair when checking in.
